John Landis

Schlock – Guilty pleasure. Landis’ and Rick Baker’s first pairing. The “Don’t call me ‘Shirley’.” line was spoken in this movie before Airplane!

Kentucky Fried MovieThe Zucker Bros and Jim Abrahams when they were still funny.
Animal House -This one put Landis on the map (several people got their start in this one, and some others never really took off). For me, the most interesting guy to come out of here is Bruce McGill (D-Day). This cat has had a long character actor career and you all have seen him in something. But in Animal House he’s almost unrecognizable.
The Blues Brothers – I bet this movie still has the record for crashing the most police cars. This might be the first thing I ever saw John Candy in, before I knew who John Candy was. The first time I saw the Bluesmobile do its back flip, I could not breath because I laughed so hard.
An American Werewolf In London – Groundbreaking. The first Oscar for special makeup effects (this award was created because of the work done on The Elephant Man; the people felt there should be an award for such work). This is Landis’ last moment of greatness before he lost his mojo in the Twilight Zone disaster. Trading Places was ok, I’ll give him that, but everything else was drek. He did exec produce the HBO series Dream On which I was fond of. I’ve read there are plans to remake Werewolf. If that’s true, the people involved should die of dysentery related dehydration
