Sergei Parajanov

Here’s another visual artist from Russia, but he also has a lot of performance art in his films. He and Jodorowsky shoulda paired up. Sergei did not have an easy time in the Soviet Union. He was jailed a few times and persecuted for being bisexual. But he never compromised his vision.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors – Lots of experimental filmmaking flourishes in this one. If you think Peter Jackson moves the camera a lot, check this out. Those Russians sure knew how to move the camera through a forest.
